Conference Venue Information
The University of Bristol is host to this year’s Society of Legal Scholars Conference, ‘Pressing Problems in Law and Legal Education’. The conference will be held in the Wills Memorial Building which is home to the School of Law, from the 11th to the 14th September 2012. Registration for the conference will take place in the foyer area of the Wills Memorial Building just outside the Great Hall, the desk will be open daily from 10.30 – 17.00 on the Tuesday, 08.00 – 17.00 on the Wednesday and Thursday, then 08.00 – 12.00 on the Friday. The Conference Management Team will be on duty at these times to also answer any queries about the event or your booking.
All subject section meetings and plenaries will be hosted in the Wills Memorial Building all within a few minutes’ walk from the where the registration, catering and exhibition are taking place.
There will be 28 Subject Sections following the same pattern as in previous years with 14 being held in Group A on the Tuesday / Wednesday and 14 in Group B on the Thursday / Friday. Each Subject section meeting will be allocated 4 x 90 minute meetings with three papers in each.
Moreover, there will be a number plenary sessions featuring high profile speakers. Details of these plenaries will be available shortly.
The conference will once more host a research students/early careers session which will focus on issues such as supervising research and getting published. The sections will also have the opportunity to discuss the teaching of their subjects.
There will also be a Birks Book prize session which will give the 2011 winner a chance to discuss his book. The 2012 winner will be announced at the Annual Gala Dinner which is being hosted on the Wednesday evening at the At-Bristol Science Centre.
The SLS Council Meeting and AGM will also be held during the event.
Papers and Poster Presentations
The call for papers for the subject section meetings has now gone out. If you have not received a message but wish to give a paper, please contact the relevant convenor directly at http://sections.legalscholars.ac.uk/
New for 2012 we are introducing poster presentations of research. The posters will be displayed in the Great Hall adjacent to the publisher’s exhibition, where there will be software demostrations.
NB Those giving papers and presenting posters are expected to book to attend the conference as a delegate.
The Publishers Exhibition will be situated in the magnificent Great Hall of the Wills Memorial Building which will also play host to refreshments and light lunches each day, giving you plenty of opportunity to visit the stands.
Conference Refreshments and Catering
As previously mentioned the conference refreshments and lunches will be served in the Exhibition area in the Great Hall throughout the event. Breakfast will be served daily either at Hawthorns if staying in the University accommodation or at your choice of hotel depending on your booking option. Access to the internet should be available through either Eduroam or Bristol Visitor. However, the organisers cannot guarantee this and assume no responsibility for the availability of wi-fi etc.
Accessibility – Wills Memorial Building
The University will make every effort to meet additional requirements e.g. provision of hearing loop systems etc., we advise you to inform us of any requirements as soon as possible so we can liaise with the Conference Office as early as possible to discuss the provision of additional support for disabled delegates. The dinner on the Tuesday evening will be held at the Council House which is a few minutes’ walk downhill from the Wills Memorial Building. The Annual Gala Dinner will take place on the Wednesday evening at the At-Bristol Science Centre where delegates will have time to explore the exhibits during the drinks reception. The Thursday evening will be hosted on board the Brunel’s ss Great Britain which was the world’s first great ocean liner. The evening will commence with free time to explore the ship and museum, followed by a West Country Themed buffet and a bottle of Weston’s Organic Cider.
